Taiwan Unveils Anduril-Designed Barracuda-500, Targets Local Mass Production

An expanded Taipei defense expo underscores a pivot to co-development of low-cost, asymmetric weapons.

Overview

  • Taiwan’s NCSIST showcased the Barracuda-500, an autonomous, low-cost cruise missile designed by Anduril for group attacks on warships.
  • NCSIST said it will pursue technology transfer to build a full on-island production line with a per-missile cost target below T$6.5 million ($216,000).
  • The institute plans to sign two contracts and six MOUs during the three-day show, including agreements for AirShare anti-drone rockets and Anduril underwater surveillance drones.
  • Taipei opened its largest defense exhibition with 490 exhibitors and a larger U.S. pavilion featuring more than 40 companies, including Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman.
  • Industry estimates foresee $50–60 billion in upcoming procurement, with roughly one-third going to domestic programs and two-thirds to international suppliers, largely in the United States.
