Taiwan Reports Record 66 Chinese Warplanes in 24-Hour Period

The surge in military activity coincides with joint China-Russia naval exercises and a NATO summit critical of Beijing's support for Russia.

  • Taiwan detected 66 Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels around the island in a single day, the highest number this year.
  • Fifty-six of the aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, with some coming within 33 nautical miles of Taiwan’s southern tip.
  • The Chinese aircraft were reportedly headed to the western Pacific for exercises with the aircraft carrier Shandong.
  • China's latest show of force is seen as a reaction to recent political developments, including U.S. support for Taiwan.
  • Japan and the Philippines have also reported increased Chinese military activity near their territories.
