Taiwan Discloses 210 Bitcoin Seized in Criminal Cases

Officials have not announced plans for liquidation or detailed custody arrangements.

Overview

  • Taiwan’s Ministry of Justice reported holding 210.45 BTC as of Oct. 31, an amount worth about $18 million at recent prices.
  • The figure was revealed in response to a legislative inquiry by lawmaker Ko Ju-chun, who shared documentation, and the ministry said the assets came from financial crime and illegal digital asset activity.
  • Authorities have not decided on disposition, with options under review including public auctions, and they have not specified whether the BTC is self-custodied or held by a third party.
  • The ministry’s inventory totals roughly NT$1.3 billion in seized crypto, largely dollar-pegged stablecoins along with Ether, Binance Coin, Tron and Livepeer.
  • The holdings place Taiwan among leading government Bitcoin holders globally, the U.S. remains the largest with more than 328,000 BTC, and Taiwan has not announced Bitcoin for national reserves as regulators pursue tighter stablecoin rules and a VASP law that points to any local stablecoin launch no earlier than late 2026.
