Overview

  • Tadao Ando’s Naoshima New Museum of Art has opened on Japan’s Naoshima island as the tenth architectural project in the Benesse Art Site Naoshima initiative.
  • The museum’s design spans one above-ground and two subterranean levels with four galleries radiating from a skylit vertical axis founded on Ando’s concrete, light and silence vocabulary.
  • Directed by Miki Akiko, the inaugural 'From the Origin to the Future' exhibition features site-specific works and major commissions by leading Asian artists such as Takashi Murakami, Do Ho Suh and Cai Guo-Qiang.
  • Visitors can experience diverse installations throughout the galleries, café and outdoor zones that revisit iconic projects and explore themes of identity, memory and connections to place.
  • Located within a residential district, the museum embodies Benesse Art Site Naoshima’s 35-year 'well-being' vision by integrating art, architecture, nature and community engagement.
