Taco Bell Successfully Ends 'Taco Tuesday' Trademark Dispute with New Jersey Restaurant

New Jersey establishment Gregory’s Restaurant relents trademark on "Taco Tuesday" phrase, allowing restaurants across the US to legally use the term following a legal challenge from Taco Bell.

  • Taco Bell has successfully ended a trademark dispute over the term 'Taco Tuesday', a popular phrase used by many restaurants for weekly taco promotions. The dispute was with Gregory's Restaurant & Bar in New Jersey and another company, Taco John’s.
  • Gregory's Restaurant had held a trademark on the phrase in New Jersey since 1979 and Taco John’s had a separate trademark covering the rest of the United States. Both companies have agreed to abandon their respective trademarks following challenges from Taco Bell.
  • Taco Bell argued that the phrase 'Taco Tuesday' had been monopolized by the trademark holders and was in fact a generic term that should be freely available for use by all restaurants.
  • Following the resolution of the dispute, all restaurants across the United States can now legally use the term 'Taco Tuesday' for promotional purposes.
  • Despite the relinquishment of the trademark, Taco Bell and Gregory’s Restaurant have expressed their continued commitment to celebrating 'Taco Tuesday' and hope others will now build their own traditions around the event.
