T-Mobile Turns On App Data Over Starlink, Bringing WhatsApp, Maps and X to Dead Zones

New SAT mode frameworks enable select apps to run over a 650+ Starlink direct-to-cell network with tailored, low-bandwidth functions.

Overview

  • The rollout adds support for WhatsApp, Google Maps, X, AllTrails, AccuWeather, CalTopo, onX and T-Mobile’s T-Life on eligible iPhone and Android devices.
  • WhatsApp works for messages, photos, voice notes and supports voice and video calls, while other apps provide pared-back features designed for satellite links.
  • Phones automatically switch to the satellite connection when cellular or Wi‑Fi drops, and supported apps deliver critical services rather than full data-heavy experiences.
  • Access is included on T-Mobile’s top plans, and other users — including AT&T and Verizon customers — can add T‑Satellite for $10 per month.
  • T-Mobile says it built SAT mode frameworks with Apple and Google to let developers enable satellite-aware behavior through an API, with more apps encouraged to join.
