T-Mobile Opens Free Satellite Text-to-911 to All Wireless Users

The Starlink-powered service automatically routes emergency texts when cell towers are out of reach across roughly 500,000 square miles.

Overview

  • T-Mobile’s Text to 911 over its T-Satellite network is now free for anyone with a compatible smartphone, including AT&T and Verizon customers.
  • Phones switch to satellites automatically when no terrestrial signal is available, using more than 650 Starlink satellites for off-grid coverage.
  • Compatible devices exclude models with built-in emergency satellite texting such as iPhone 14 and newer and Pixel 9 and newer (except 9A), with support including iPhone 13, Samsung Galaxy S21 and up, and recent Motorola phones.
  • T-Mobile customers can enable the feature in account settings or T-Life, non‑customers can enroll on T-Mobile’s website, and business users can call 866-380-7511.
  • Full T-Satellite messaging, data, and location services remain plan-included for select T-Mobile offerings or available a la carte for about $10 per month, and the 911 feature defers to native iPhone and Pixel emergency services when present and may be delayed or limited without a clear sky view.
