T-Mobile Expands Starlink-Powered T-Satellite to WhatsApp, Google Maps and X

Phones now fail over to a low-bandwidth satellite link that supports essential features, with access bundled on premium plans or available for $10 per month.

Overview

  • The update brings limited off-grid functionality to third-party and native apps, including AllTrails, AccuWeather, CalTopo and onX.
  • WhatsApp over the satellite link supports messages, voice notes, images, and voice and video calls, including group chats.
  • Devices automatically switch to Starlink’s direct-to-cell network when terrestrial service drops, prioritizing critical experiences over full data-heavy use.
  • The service runs on more than 650 Starlink direct-to-cell satellites and works on select iPhone, Pixel and Samsung phone models.
  • T-Mobile developed SAT-mode frameworks with Apple and Google to enable app support via an API and extended access to business tools like Dialpad, FLORIAN, MultiLine and T-Mobile Direct Connect.
