T-Mobile Expands Starlink-Powered Satellite Service to Support WhatsApp, Google Maps and X

Apps tap a new SAT-mode API built with Apple and Google, enabling low-bandwidth fallback in dead zones.

Overview

  • The satellite-to-cell network now supports popular apps such as WhatsApp, Google Maps, X, AccuWeather, AllTrails and Apple Music.
  • Coverage runs on more than 650 Starlink direct-to-cell satellites, and phones switch to the satellite link automatically when cellular service drops.
  • T-Mobile created SAT-mode frameworks with Apple and Google so developers can enable satellite connectivity through an API.
  • Voice and video calling over the satellite link are currently limited to WhatsApp, with app experiences tuned for critical, low-data tasks rather than full-speed use.
  • The service is included with T-Mobile’s Experience Beyond plan, or can be added by customers on other carriers for $10 per month.
