Syrian Forces Seize Tabqa and Its Euphrates Dam as SDF Withdrawals Unravel

U.S. commanders call for a halt to the advance over unresolved disputes on integrating the SDF.

Overview

  • The government says its troops took control of Tabqa and the country’s largest Euphrates dam and seized two nearby oilfields.
  • State media also reported the capture of the Tabqa military airbase after advances that had already brought Deir Hafer and Maskana under government control east of Aleppo.
  • The SDF said Damascus violated withdrawal arrangements and fought its units around Dibsi Afnan, while Kurdish authorities imposed a curfew in parts of Raqqa province.
  • U.S. Central Command publicly urged Syrian forces to stop offensive operations between Aleppo and Tabqa.
  • Displacement continued from newly contested towns and Aleppo, as decrees recognizing Kurdish language and Newroz failed to break the deadlock over integrating SDF institutions into the state.
