Syria Declares Closed Military Zone East of Aleppo After Kurdish Evacuation From City

International mediation has produced a fragile pause in Aleppo, with integration talks stalled.

Overview

  • Army officials labeled areas near Maskana and Deir Hafer a closed military zone and urged armed groups to withdraw east of the Euphrates, while the SDF denied any troop buildup.
  • Hundreds of Kurdish fighters were bused out of Sheikh Maqsoud to SDF-held northeast Syria over the weekend, with the Interior Ministry saying more than 400 were evacuated and about 300 were arrested.
  • Government forces now control Achrafieh and Bani Zaid, and security units are conducting sweeps, demining operations, and tunnel inspections in reclaimed neighborhoods.
  • Displaced residents have begun returning to parts of Aleppo under security checks as shops reopen, and the UN prepares additional convoys carrying food, fuel, blankets, and other supplies.
  • Both sides traded accusations over attacks on civilian sites, with state media blaming Kurdish fighters for a drone strike on the governorate building and the SDF alleging government strikes on hospitals.
