Syria and Kurdish-Led SDF Announce Comprehensive Ceasefire After Aleppo Clashes

US-brokered talks produced a pause in fighting, with the March integration plan still largely unimplemented.

Overview

  • Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra said he agreed with SDF commander Mazloum Abdi on an immediate, comprehensive truce across northern and northeastern fronts after meetings in Damascus.
  • Overnight fighting in Aleppo’s Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh districts left at least one member of Syria’s Internal Security Forces dead and others, including civilians, wounded, according to state media.
  • Residents and local reports described mortars, heavy machine guns and rooftop sniper positions during the clashes, while the SDF denied attacking checkpoints or maintaining forces inside the two neighborhoods.
  • Despite the ceasefire, roadblocks and access restrictions remained around the Kurdish-majority districts on Wednesday, with movement tightly controlled and sniper positions observed.
  • US envoy Tom Barrack and CENTCOM’s Admiral Brad Cooper met both Abdi and President Ahmed al‑Sharaa to press the stalled March deal, as Syria’s foreign minister said integration efforts remain “ink on paper.”
