Syria and Kurdish-Led SDF Announce Ceasefire Across North After Aleppo Clashes

The move follows months of stalled efforts to fold Kurdish-led forces into state institutions.

Overview

  • Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra said he met SDF commander Mazloum Abdi in Damascus and agreed to a comprehensive ceasefire across northern and northeastern fronts with immediate implementation.
  • State media reported a local truce in Aleppo’s Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh districts after overnight fighting that left at least one member of the internal security forces dead and others, including civilians, injured.
  • The Syrian Defence Ministry confirmed recent redeployments along front lines with the SDF in the northeast and said they were not a prelude to an offensive, while the SDF denied attacking Aleppo checkpoints and said it had no forces in those neighborhoods.
  • The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported communications cutoffs and encirclement by reinforcements in the affected Aleppo districts, and residents described curbs on movement during the violence.
  • U.S. envoy Tom Barrack and CENTCOM’s Admiral Brad Cooper met Mazloum Abdi to push implementation of the March integration pact, which remains fragile despite the new ceasefire.
