Sylvan Esso Release 'WDID,' Pull Catalog From Spotify

The duo say they removed their music to protest Spotify’s ties to military AI funding.

Overview

  • “WDID” is their first original song since 2022 and the first Sylvan Esso release on their own label, Psychic Hotline.
  • They confirmed their studio albums are off Spotify, saying they won’t keep their life’s work on a platform that “directly funds war machines.”
  • The single arrives on a 12-inch vinyl on Jan. 9, backed by a new track called “KEEP ON” developed with Daniel Aged and TJ Maiani.
  • They now stand alongside artists such as Massive Attack, Deerhoof, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor who have left Spotify over CEO Daniel Ek’s investment in military AI.
  • They have been recording at their Chapel Hill studio, Betty’s, with additional production from Jake Luppen and are shaping a new album from roughly 30–40 song ideas.
