Sydney’s Northern Beaches Close Briefly After Shark Reports, Reopen the Same Afternoon

Officials enforced standard safety protocols after a vessel report alongside a tagged shark detection.

Overview

  • Several beaches from Manly to North Narrabeen were shut to swimmers and then reopened by 2pm after no further sightings were confirmed.
  • Marine Rescue Sydney said a vessel about 200 metres off North Narrabeen reported a shark estimated at more than six metres in length.
  • The NSW Department of Primary Industries recorded a tagged tiger shark at the North Steyne receiver off Manly at 12:39pm, after a previous ping three days earlier at Soldiers Beach.
  • Lifeguards followed standard procedures by closing beaches, conducting jetski patrols, and advising swimmers to use patrolled areas and exercise caution, with reopenings typically occurring after an hour without alerts.
  • The response comes a month after surfer Mercury Psillakis died in a September 6 attack, with Mayor Sue Heins saying the council is prioritising caution and community support as vigilance continues.
