Sydney Locks In October 30 Opening for Final M1 Metro Section

Regulators have cleared the 13-kilometre Sydenham–Bankstown conversion with temporary safety measures in place during final gap‑filler repairs.

Overview

  • The NSW government confirmed services will start on Friday, October 30, with the first trains running from 4:31am at ten stations between Bankstown and Dulwich Hill.
  • Metro Trains Sydney delivered the final safety case to the national rail regulator last week and authorities say regulator clearance has been obtained for passenger operations.
  • A small number of platform screen doors will remain closed at four stations and engineers are finishing 170 mechanical gap fillers and fixes to automated sliders that bridge gaps between trains and curved platforms.
  • The opening ends more than two years of replacement‑bus services that began in September 2024 and cost about $200 million, with rail buses to be kept on standby for the first days of service.
  • The project’s cost has risen sharply from earlier estimates to roughly $23 billion for the city and south‑west sections and a new Sydney Trains timetable will be introduced in mid‑November to integrate services with the metro.
