Overview

  • Sydney Airport and Qantas began trialling a digital incoming passenger card on August 5 for travellers arriving from Auckland and Queenstown.
  • Passengers complete an e-declaration via the Qantas app before departure and scan a QR-coded digital pass with border and biosecurity officers upon arrival.
  • The Sydney trial builds on an October 2024 Brisbane pilot that registered over 70,000 users and informs the rollout of 32 new SmartGate kiosks.
  • Australian Border Force is working with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and airport authorities on a phased expansion to more routes, airlines and airports.
  • Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the system will expedite passenger exit and uphold strict biosecurity safeguards at Australia’s busiest international gateway.
