Sycamore Gap ‘Trees of Hope’ Begin Planting Nationwide for National Tree Week

The National Trust is distributing 49 saplings raised from rescued seed to public sites to carry the landmark’s legacy into communities.

Overview

  • Planting starts with five sites on Saturday, including Coventry’s Tree Sanctuary, the Minnie Pit memorial in Staffordshire, Greenham Common in Berkshire, Coton Orchard in Cambridgeshire, and Strabane in County Tyrone.
  • Further installations this week include the Rob Burrow Centre at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds, Hexham General Hospital in Northumberland, and Veterans in Crisis in Sunderland.
  • The 49 young trees, one for each foot of the original’s height, were propagated from material taken after the 2023 felling and nurtured at the National Trust’s Plant Conservation Centre, and they now stand about four to six feet tall.
  • Nearly 500 groups applied to host a sapling, and all plantings are being placed in publicly accessible locations to maximize public benefit and remembrance.
  • The first sapling was gifted to the King to be planted on behalf of the nation at a later date, with a broader phase planned for UK national parks in early 2026.
