Sycamore Gap ‘Trees of Hope’ Begin Nationwide Planting for National Tree Week

The National Trust nurtured rescued material from the felled landmark into 49 offspring to serve communities as living memorials.

Overview

  • Planting begins with five saplings going in the ground today as National Tree Week starts, with the rest to follow over the coming days.
  • Early sites include the Tree Sanctuary in Coventry, the Minnie Pit memorial in Staffordshire, and Greenham Common in Berkshire.
  • Further plantings this week are scheduled at the Rob Burrow Centre in Leeds, Hexham General Hospital in Northumberland, and by Veterans in Crisis at Hetton Lyons Country Park in Sunderland.
  • The first sapling was gifted to the King for planting at a later date after the Trust received more than 500 applications to host a tree.
  • The 49 saplings—grown at the Trust’s plant conservation centre to mirror the original tree’s 49‑foot height—will be followed by a school planting at Henshaw next month and wider national‑park plantings from early 2026.
