SWR Radio Legend Matthias Holtmann Dies at 75

The former SDR3/SWR3 music chief shaped pop radio in southwest Germany for decades.

  • SWR confirmed on Sunday that Matthias Holtmann has died at the age of 75.
  • He joined SDR in 1979 and helped forge SDR3’s identity as the “Radio für den wilden Süden.”
  • He later served as music chief at SDR3 and SWR3 before moving to SWR1, hosting “Treff nach zwei,” “Dr. Music,” and other SWR1 programs, as well as TV shows including “Extraspät” and “Ring frei.”
  • Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2009, he published the memoir “Porsche, Pop und Parkinson” in 2022 and continued performing, receiving a standing ovation in Stuttgart in May last year.
