Switzerland and Austria Lead as Top European Destinations for Germans, Destatis Reports

Statisticians attribute the draw to nearby locations with fewer language hurdles.

Overview

  • Germans living in Switzerland reached about 323,600 at the start of 2024, up 2.4% year over year, keeping the country in first place.
  • Austria ranked second with roughly 232,700 German nationals, rising 3.4% from a year earlier and up 41.2% over the past decade.
  • Spain placed third with about 128,000 Germans, a 1.8% annual increase that continues a rebound since 2022 but remains 9.8% below 2014 levels.
  • France and the Netherlands followed in fourth and fifth, with Belgium, Italy and Sweden next; Destatis also listed Denmark and Norway to round out the top ten.
  • The figures reflect registered residence counts as of early 2024, and UK data were excluded from 2014–2024 comparisons because only data through 2019 are available after Brexit.
