Swiss Authorities Warn of Potential Large Rockfall on Säntis

Cantonal officials have closed vulnerable zones and paused nearby operations while geotechnical studies are carried out to decide on further safety measures.

Overview

  • A pilot first reported an unusual unstable area on the north face of the Säntis and helicopter inspections by geologists revealed a deep fissure in the rock beneath the Girenspitz.
  • Officials estimate up to 15,000 cubic meters of rock could detach from the affected section of the north face.
  • Local and cantonal authorities have closed parts of the Schwägalp area and a pedestrian road below the face while allowing motorized and bicycle traffic to continue on the road.
  • A nearby gravel pit halted operations immediately and the cantonal Amt für Raum und Wald has commissioned a geotechnical office to carry out detailed assessments in the coming weeks.
  • Authorities have urged hikers to stay on official safe trails; the forthcoming studies will determine if exclusion zones, rock stabilization or controlled detachment are needed and will shape any longer-term restrictions for visitors.
