Swimmer, 51, Dies After Being Pulled From Sea Off Brighton on New Year’s Day

Authorities highlight cold-water risks following the non-suspicious death.

Overview

  • Sussex Police said crews were called at 10:35am to the water west of Brighton Palace Pier, where the man from Kettering was recovered and pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Police confirmed the coroner and next of kin were notified and stated the death is not being treated as suspicious.
  • The Guardian reported police said the swimmer had attempted to help a woman who was struggling in the water.
  • The RNLI warned of cold-water shock in waters at or below 15C and urged people to check conditions and know their limits before winter swims.
  • Sea temperatures around the UK and Ireland typically range from 6C to 10C at this time of year, and the warning follows a separate Christmas Day incident at Budleigh Salterton where two men, including Matthew Upham, remain missing after others were rescued.
