SWIFT Activates Blockchain Ledger for 24/7 Tokenized Payments

The move signals an incumbent bid to offer regulated always-on rails that will test whether tokenized bank deposits can scale, share liquidity and meet oversight requirements.

Overview

  • Swift moved the shared ledger into controlled live use on July 9, 2026, and enlisted 17 global banks to prepare real transactions using bank-issued tokenized deposits.
  • Tokenized deposits are digital representations of a bank’s existing customer balances that can be moved across the ledger anytime while final fiat settlement stays on legacy payment rails.
  • Swift built the orchestration layer in nine months with input from international banks and designed it to preserve banks’ compliance, credit and risk controls rather than replace them.
  • Key open questions for the pilot are scale and liquidity: issuer-specific tokens may not be interchangeable, creating fragmentation, and regulators have not settled issues such as deposit insurance, reserve treatment and crisis behavior.
  • If the pilot succeeds the ledger could speed corporate cash flow and enable programmable money, but widespread adoption will hinge on proving interoperability with other bank networks and answering oversight and liquidity challenges.
