Overview

  • The study examined 312,221 singleton births in Sweden from 2010 to 2022 among mothers aged 35 and older.
  • Women aged 45 and above experienced a stillbirth rate of 0.83%, nearly double the 0.42% rate for mothers aged 35–39.
  • Premature birth incidence increased from 4.8% in the 35–39 age group to 8.4% for those aged 45 and older.
  • Infants of the oldest mothers were 46% more likely to be small for gestational age and faced an 82% higher risk of neonatal hypoglycemia.
  • With births to women over 40 rising to 4.8% in 2022, researchers recommend targeted prenatal monitoring to address age-related complications.
