Swedish EU Diplomat Johan Floderus on Trial in Iran on Spying Charges

Floderus has been held in jail for over 600 days, facing charges deemed baseless by Swedish and EU authorities.

Swedish EU diplomat Johan Floderus has been held in an Iranian jail for over 600 days and is now facing trial on charges of spying for Israel and 'corruption on Earth', a crime that carries the death penalty.
Floderus was arrested in Iran in 2022 and his trial began on December 10, 2023.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and the European External Action Service have both declared the charges against Floderus to be without factual basis and are demanding his immediate release.
Floderus's father, Matts Floderus, has revealed that his son has been on hunger strike at least five times and is sharing a cell with no bed in it and slept under 24-hour lighting.
Relations between Sweden and Iran have been tense since 2019 when Sweden arrested a former Iranian official for his part in the mass execution and torture of political prisoners in the 1980s.
