Sweden to Train Ukrainian Pilots on JAS 39 Gripen Jets, But Will Not Provide Them
- Experienced Ukrainian pilots will train on simulators and make test flights of Swedish Gripen fighter jets.
- The training program is meant only as a "familiarization program" and Sweden has no plans to give Ukraine any planes.
- Sweden needs its Gripen jets for its own defense and has previously rejected Ukraine's request for the planes.
- Other countries including the U.S., U.K. and Netherlands have pledged to train Ukraine's pilots on F-16s and provide the actual fighter jets.
- Although Sweden is opening up training, it will not transfer any Gripen planes to Ukraine.
