Sweden Says Greta Thunberg Alleges Harsh Treatment in Israeli Custody After Gaza Flotilla Seizure

A Swedish embassy visit to Ketziot recorded her account of dehydration, scant provisions and suspected bedbug rashes.

Overview

  • Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla of more than 40 vessels between Thursday and Friday and detained about 437 participants, including Thunberg, with most held at Ketziot prison in the Negev.
  • In an email seen by reporters, a Swedish foreign ministry official said Thunberg reported insufficient food and water, dehydration and rashes she believes were caused by bedbugs.
  • The embassy correspondence noted she was asked to sign a document she did not understand and that she has had access to legal counsel.
  • Another detainee reportedly told diplomats that Thunberg was made to hold flags for photographs, with the flags’ identity unclear.
  • Lawyers from Adalah and the flotilla’s Italian legal team alleged detainees were denied water, sanitation, medication and prompt legal access, and Israeli authorities did not respond to media requests for comment as National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir labeled the activists “terrorists.”
