Sweden Reports Productive Gripen Talks With Peru as Lima Weighs Fighter Options

Peru is evaluating updated proposals in Europe after signaling a requirement for about 24 jets.

Overview

  • A Peruvian delegation led by Defense Minister Walter Astudillo met Swedish officials in Stockholm on Aug. 27–28, with Pål Jonson calling the discussions "productive."
  • The Riksdag has authorized negotiations for up to 12 Gripens, and Jonson said talks covering as many as 24 aircraft would be acceptable.
  • Lima is in final evaluations of Saab Gripen E, Dassault Rafale F4d the F-1F-16, with Paris the next stop after a May visit to U.S. facilities.
  • FAP commander Gen. Enrique Chavez Cateriano says the air force requires 24 multirole fighters to safeguard sovereignty for the next 30–40 years.
  • Sweden discussed Saab’s GlobalEye as part of the dialogue, and any Gripen deal would likely feature technology transfer and industrial offsets similar to recent packages.
