Sweden Approves SEK 15 Billion Territorial Air-Defense Buildout to Shield Cities and Infrastructure

Officials cite lessons from Ukraine to strengthen civilian protection.

Overview

  • The government approved a SEK 15 billion program for new ground-based short-range air-defense units, with the first industrial order scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
  • Modular, company-sized units will combine weapons, sensors and command systems, operate deployable or in fixed areas, and are intended to protect bridges, rail hubs, power plants and urban centers.
  • The initiative adds to nearly SEK 40 billion in earlier air-defense procurements, including IRIS-T systems, man-portable missiles, Patriot interceptors and anti-drone electronic warfare investments.
  • In parallel, Sweden will invest more than SEK 4 billion in unmanned capabilities such as loitering munitions, reconnaissance drones, airborne electronic warfare and marine drones, with deliveries expected between 2026 and 2028.
  • A SEK 1.3 billion space package will field roughly ten ISR satellites, including new contracts with ICEYE and Planet for satellites, data and software, with initial deliveries expected starting in 2026.
