Suzuki Fronx Gets One-Star ANCAP Rating After Rear Seatbelt Failure

Owners are told to avoid the back seats pending a regulatory review of the fault, prompting an urgent manufacturer investigation.

Overview

  • ANCAP reported that a full-width frontal test saw a rear seatbelt retractor release, leaving the dummy unrestrained and striking the front seat.
  • The Fronx recorded 48% for Adult Occupant Protection and 40% for Child Occupant Protection, with zero points in the full-width test due to high chest loads, head acceleration and neck tension.
  • ANCAP referred the seatbelt component failure to safety regulators in Australia and New Zealand, and no formal recall has been announced.
  • Suzuki Australia and Suzuki New Zealand halted sales and are contacting owners while working with Suzuki Motor Corporation in Japan on an urgent review.
  • Approximately 1,300 vehicles are in Australian customers’ hands and about 1,115 are registered in New Zealand, with advice that rear seats should not be used until rectifications are confirmed.
