Suvendu Declares Nandigram Priority as He Seeks Larger Bypoll Mandate

The chief minister is linking a rapid rollout of welfare and infrastructure to a campaign push that aims to convert local delivery into expanded electoral support.

Overview

  • On Monday Suvendu Adhikari publicly made Nandigram his government’s “number one priority” and urged voters to exceed his previous 82,000-vote margin in the pending bypoll.
  • The administration unveiled nearly Rs 300 crore of works that include the inauguration or foundation-laying of 32 road projects and accelerated rural infrastructure across Nandigram I and II.
  • Housing measures announced include second instalment payments of Rs 60,000 to 7,300 beneficiaries and a plan to build about 11,700 new houses in the current financial year.
  • Health coverage was expanded with the local distribution of roughly 2.5 lakh Ayushman Bharat cards, state coverage for about 87,000 people excluded from the national scheme, and a government claim of over 16,800 free treatments since August 16.
  • The Nandigram Assembly seat is vacant after Adhikari resigned his MLA post and the Election Commission has not set a bypoll date; the government has also begun withdrawing movement-related cases and is pressing land transfers for a proposed rail link that it says could be operational by March next year.
