SUV Bypasses Crossing Gates and Is Struck by Commuter Train, Killing Five in Gary

Overview

  • The collision occurred around 10 p.m. June 25 near the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and Utah Street in Gary, Indiana.
  • A vehicle with five occupants drove around active railroad crossing gates before being hit by the eastbound South Shore Line train carrying 32 passengers.
  • All five people in the SUV—identified as Maurice Parrish, Sherise Parrish, Latianna King, Byron Towns and De’Mario Craig—were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
  • None of the passengers or crew on board the train sustained injuries, and service was temporarily halted but has since resumed.
  • The Gary Police Department and NICTD Transit Police Department are jointly investigating the crash to determine how the SUV bypassed safety controls.
