Sutter Health Picks Santa Clara Site for 272-Bed Hospital in $2.8 Billion Expansion

The project represents Sutter’s largest investment to address a longstanding hospital gap in South Silicon Valley.

Overview

  • The eight-story, approximately 850,000-square-foot hospital is planned for 2831 and 2841 Mission College Blvd. on a 13.6-acre parcel near Levi’s Stadium with a target opening in late 2031.
  • Sutter will create an integrated medical campus by demolishing two existing office buildings and renovating two others so inpatient and outpatient care operate on the same property.
  • Key services include private rooms for 272 licensed beds with future expansion capacity, a full emergency department, intensive care, labor and delivery, a level 3 NICU, advanced operating rooms, and a rooftop helipad.
  • The Santa Clara build is part of a broader East and West campus plan totaling $2.8 billion in investment in collaboration with Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group and The Sobrato Organization.
  • An EY analysis cited by Sutter projects more than 5,000 supported jobs at full opening by 2031, including an estimated 3,000 direct roles, with development expected to support about 2,500 construction jobs.
