Sutter Health Fires Santa Barbara Urgent Care Staff Over Viral TikTok Mocking Patients

The company says it acted within 48 hours of learning of the posts.

Overview

  • Sutter Health said employees were placed on leave within a day of the posts being reported and were terminated within another day, with an internal investigation continuing.
  • The since-deleted video showed workers posing around stained exam tables with captions such as “Guess the substance” and “Are patients allowed to leave you guys gifts?”
  • USA TODAY reported that about eight people were seen participating in the images purportedly taken inside exam rooms at the Sansum Clinic urgent care.
  • The video was posted by a former employee who left the organization in late July, and the original upload was removed but copies continue to circulate online.
  • Sutter clarified the setting was urgent care in Santa Barbara, not an OB/GYN clinic, and directed concerned patients to its advocacy team or to file privacy complaints with HHS’ Office for Civil Rights.
