Suspects Use Gas, Possibly Nitrogen, in Failed ATM Attack in Huancayo

Police have launched a forensic-led hunt to identify the group.

Overview

  • The attempted robbery struck a Caja Huancayo ATM at the José Olaya and Tarapacá intersection before dawn, where assailants released gas inside the machine and ignited it with a spark, according to General Danilo Vera.
  • To hinder pursuit, the group scattered metal road spikes that punctured patrol car tires, forcing responding officers to advance on foot.
  • Security cameras captured the perpetrators arriving and fleeing in a vehicle, with reports differing between a red car and a gray Kia Sportage, and images showing suspects in protective coveralls.
  • Police say one person linked to the case was detained days earlier by the Immigration Police and holds records for explosives and firearms, was released without preventive detention, and is now being scrutinized for possible involvement, with one outlet identifying him as Colombian.
  • No cash was taken and no injuries were reported, the PNP deployed Criminalística and UDEX to process evidence and footage, and one report cites police as saying the gas used may have been nitrogen; Caja Huancayo says services continue normally.
