Overview

  • Northumbria Police were called at 12:20pm after a report of a suspected unexploded device at a Swinhoe Road property and established a cordon on Roseden Way near Brunton Lane.
  • Several homes and the Great Park Community Centre—where a children’s club was in session—were evacuated as a precaution with all occupants accounted for.
  • The Army’s bomb squad and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team have been alerted and are due to examine and remove the device.
  • Newcastle City Council has put road closures in place and opened a rest centre at Newcastle Racecourse in Gosforth Park for displaced residents.
  • Emergency services continue to manage the ongoing operation to safely dispose of the device and enable residents’ return once the area is declared secure.
