Suspected Coordinator of Rio Hospital Invasion Found Shot Dead in Paciência

Police say the death is a possible retaliation for the Pedro II breach.

Overview

  • Erlan Oliveira de Araújo, known as "Orelha," was found with gunshot wounds around 11:20 p.m. Friday in Paciência, according to the Civil Police.
  • A vest bearing the DRACO insignia was seized at the scene, which investigators suspect was used in the hospital attack.
  • Police had identified Erlan as the suspected mastermind of the Pedro II invasion and of the earlier attempt to kill patient Lucas Fernandes de Sousa, known as "Japa."
  • Eight masked, armed men entered Hospital Pedro II at about 2:37 a.m. Thursday seeking Lucas, disrupting operations and causing panic among staff and patients.
  • Investigations are ongoing to locate other participants in the invasion and to determine whether Erlan’s killing was a retaliation or an execution by associates to avoid a police confrontation.
