Suspected Camera Mounts Found on Women's Toilets at Berlin University

Police are running forensic tests to see if the mounts contained memory cards or transmitted footage, prompting the university to step up inspections of sanitary areas.

Overview

  • A witness alerted police on Monday to several suspected mounts for hidden cameras in women's toilets at the HWR Lichtenberg campus and officers found mounts but no active cameras.
  • Authorities opened an investigation for intrusion into the highly personal sphere and recovered the items for criminal-technical examination to check for memory cards or any transmission capability.
  • Earlier this year police already found hidden cameras on the same campus and in June investigators discovered Velcro mounting devices in women's toilets at the Bezirksamt Lichtenberg.
  • Investigators last week searched the Treptow apartment of a 66-year-old who is suspected in the earlier camera findings, but any connection between him and the newly found mounts remains under inquiry.
  • The university has pledged stricter, documented checks of all toilets and sanitary areas, and the case highlights that under German law such acts are treated as a serious privacy offence called Eingriff in den höchstpersönlichen Lebensbereich.
