• Austin police say a rental-company tracker led them on Sept. 8 to South Point Hyundai, where a 2025 Nissan Altima stolen from a secured Houston lot had been brought for sale.
• The car was sold to the dealership for $17,000 using a fraudulent Florida title, and staff canceled payment and secured the vehicle after being alerted to the theft.
• Officers detained 32-year-old Dexter Avery Carrington when he returned to the dealership, and he later gave statements that police say conflicted with documentation.
• APD and HPD have filed six felony charges, including three in Travis County for fraudulent securing of document execution, false statement to obtain property or credit, and theft, with additional charges expected.
• Court records show Carrington was released from custody on Sept. 10, and as of Oct. 3 he had two active warrants, while police ask the public for tips via Capital Area Crime Stoppers.
