Overview

• The attack occurred July 30 when 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes forced entry into Showcase Magazine’s Danville office, dousing Councilman Lee Vogler with gasoline and igniting him outside the building.
• Hayes was arrested a few blocks away shortly after the assault following witness descriptions of him and his vehicle.
• Charging documents state that Hayes told investigators he intended for the flames to kill Vogler.
• Vogler remains hospitalized in a Lynchburg burn unit for intensive treatment of serious injuries.
• Police say the assault arose from a personal dispute and was unrelated to Vogler’s role on the Danville City Council.
