Overview
- Police say Bobby Michael Dennis, 64, was found in a wooded area and surrendered after officers served a search warrant on County Road 3509 west of Jacksonville around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
- Dennis was booked into the Cherokee County Jail on attempted capital murder of a peace officer, interference with a police service animal, and two counts of obstruction or retaliation.
- Jacksonville’s police chief said the officer who was shot underwent additional surgery Wednesday and is improving, and K-9 Renzo is recovering after several surgeries.
- Authorities had issued a Blue Alert, added Dennis to the Texas DPS Top 10 Most Wanted list, and publicized rewards, including $10,000 from Gov. Greg Abbott and another $10,000 from an anonymous donor.
- Police say the Sunday encounter began when an officer approached Dennis over two warrants, and he allegedly opened fire with an AR-15-style rifle, striking the patrol vehicle and injuring the K-9 inside.
