Suspect Held Without Bail After Washington Capitol Break-In and Fire

Officials attribute the attack to a mental-health crisis, not a political motive.

Overview

  • The suspect, identified as Gunnar McLean Schubert, was booked into Thurston County Jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary, first-degree arson and first-degree malicious mischief, and the jail confirmed he was denied bail.
  • Authorities say Schubert arrived around 10:15 p.m. Sunday, parked in a flower bed, entered through a ground-floor window with two hammers and was arrested by troopers as he exited after roughly 10 minutes inside.
  • Damage included fires in the State Reception Room, a burned flag and rug, toppled busts of George Washington and Martin Luther King Jr., and vandalized fixtures such as card readers and flags.
  • Washington State Patrol reports troopers were on scene within about 30 seconds after being alerted by a Department of Enterprise Services employee, and no injuries were reported.
  • Gov. Bob Ferguson said the State Reception Room suffered significant damage as leaders assess restoration needs and continue the criminal investigation and security review.
