Suspect Dies by Self-Inflicted Gunshot After Killing of Yazoo City Mother

The case is triggering a formal fatality review alongside calls for evidence-based lethality assessments to better identify high-risk situations.

Overview

  • Police say Kenlanda Burns, 35, was found fatally shot around 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 23 outside the Willow Wood Apartments in Yazoo City.
  • Investigators identified 39-year-old Erwin Barnes, the father of her children, as the suspect; he later died from a self-inflicted gunshot near a Highway 49 rest stop after indicating he would surrender, according to the sheriff.
  • Family members said Burns ended the relationship about a year ago to protect herself and her children after prior aggression by Barnes.
  • Community members held a vigil at the apartment complex, where a small memorial was set up; Burns worked for the Yazoo Municipal School District and is survived by three children.
  • State Rep. Fabian Nelson said the case will go to the new domestic violence fatality review board, while the Center for Violence Prevention urged adoption of a lethality-assessment protocol for courts and law enforcement.
