Suspect Arrested in Caste-Based Humiliation of Dalit Youth in Ludhiana

Police have charged the suspect under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, IT Act, SC/ST Act following a widely circulated video of the June assault

Overview

  • On July 1 in Seeda village, a mob dragged Dalit youth Harjot Singh from a salon, forcibly shaved his beard, blackened his face and paraded him half-naked while hurling caste-based slurs.
  • The assailants, identified as Gurpreet alias Gopa, Simranjeet Singh alias Simma, Sandeep alias Sam, Rajveer and Ramandeep alias Kaka, filmed the assault and circulated it online.
  • Meharban police registered an FIR on July 5 under Sections 115(2), 127(2) and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with the IT Act and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
  • Simranjeet Singh alias Simma was arrested on July 6, and police are still seeking the other identified attackers.
  • The victim’s family has called for full accountability and maximum punishment under anti-atrocity laws.
