Suspect Arrested After Fire and Vandalism in Washington State Capitol

Authorities say the break-in stemmed from a mental health crisis, not politics.

Overview

  • Troopers responded within about 30 seconds late Sunday, found the intruder as he exited the Legislative Building, and ended the incident in roughly 10 minutes.
  • Officials identified the suspect as Gunnar McLean Schubert, who was booked into Thurston County Jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary, first-degree arson, and first-degree malicious mischief.
  • Investigators say he parked on flower beds, entered through a ground-floor office window while carrying two hammers, and vandalized multiple areas before setting a fire in the State Reception Room.
  • Damage cited by officials includes a burned rug and flag, a smashed glass door, toppled busts of George Washington and Martin Luther King Jr., and defaced fixtures and flags.
  • Legislative leaders condemned the attack and said damage assessments and a review of Capitol security are underway.
