Overview

  • Officers apprehended a man in his late 30s at 8:48 a.m. in a mountainous area of Hongcheon County after a scent-tracking dog handler spotted him and a Gangwon police mobile unit made the arrest.
  • The attack occurred around 2:40 a.m. Thursday in an underground parking lot in Yongin’s Suji District, and a resident reported the killing to police at 5:45 a.m.
  • Investigators used CCTV to identify the suspect as he fled to Hongcheon, where he abandoned a car in front of a middle school; a knife believed to be the weapon was found inside the vehicle.
  • CCTV later showed the man entering a nearby mountain, and after his capture he confessed; he was transferred to the Yongin Seobu Police Station at 12:03 p.m. as police move to seek a murder warrant and request an autopsy.
  • Police say the victim, a Chinese woman in her 30s, knew the suspect, and records show she previously reported him in May before declining to pursue the case and to accept protection, with investigators now examining possible retaliation.
