Susheela Jayapal, sister of Rep. Pramila Jayapal, has launched her campaign for Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District, aiming to succeed Rep. Earl Blumenauer who will not seek re-election.
Jayapal's campaign focuses on championing progressive issues such as abortion rights, climate change policies and standing up against extremist ideologies that threaten democracy and civil rights.
She brings with her a positive track record from her tenure as Multnomah County Commissioner, where among other accomplishments, she has raised wages for frontline workers, fought for healthcare equality during the pandemic, and secured a $2 million federal grant for a non-law enforcement initiative addressing low-level criminal activity.
Her candidacy announcement has been met with endorsements from prominent figures including her sister, state representatives, and several community leaders.
If successful, the Jayapals would be the first sisters to serve concurrently in Congress representing different states.
Jayapal's bid comes amid a pivotal time in the nation's political landscape, as she prepares to take on a district that has been a stronghold for Democrats, with Blumenauer retaining over 70% of the vote in all general elections since 2004.
