Overview
- 101 men and boys from the economically struggling Senegalese fishing village of Fass Boye embarked on a wooden boat to the Canary Islands in Spain, hoping to find work. The journey was supposed to take a week.
- More than a month later, the boat was drifting further and further from its intended destination. The men ran out of fuel and food, and dozens of people, including the captain, died.
- Some men, believing they could swim to shore, jumped off the 'cursed' boat. Over the following days, dozens more did the same before disappearing into the ocean.
- On the 36th day, a Spanish fishing ship spotted them 290 km (180 miles) northeast of Cape Verde. For 38 men and boys, it was salvation. For the other 63, it was too late.
- The survivors were returned to Senegal, where they face the same economic struggles that prompted their ill-fated journey. Despite their traumatic experience, many are ready to risk their lives again.
