Surveys in Brazil Find Climate Impacts Widely Felt as COP30 Opens, but Classrooms Trail on Readiness

New polling identifies the productive sector as the main culprit behind the changes Brazilians report.

Overview

  • Quaest’s new Climate Change Perception Index reports that 94% of Brazilians say they have felt some effect of a changing climate, with heat waves cited most often.
  • Concern is widespread, as 44% describe themselves as very concerned and another 33% concerned about climate change.
  • Asked about responsibility, 84% point to the productive sector — including industry, agribusiness and non‑renewable energy — ahead of mass consumption and government.
  • A separate education survey finds only about 1 in 10 students up to high school know what COP30 is, while more than 70% say they experienced extreme heat days in the past year.
  • School readiness is viewed as lacking, with 64% of students saying they feel little or no preparation and 69% of teachers judging schools inadequate, with knowledge highest in the North and lowest in the Northeast as COP30 gathers in Belém from November 10–21.
